Property Development

This is something we are seeking to expand professionally, but it's also something we enjoy! There is a genuine sense of accomplishment taking a neglected property and bringing it back to a presentable condition.

Radio Control/Robotics/Home Automation

  • I enjoy just about anything considered 'geeky', including IT in all its forms, finding new/novel uses for IT & technology, radio control (I have submitted 3 of my modified vehicles here, (1 with a scratch built chassis)) - I want to expand on this by delving into robotics and home automation (if I have the time!).

  • Update (Dec/07): An ideal software platform has emerged for amateur roboticists Microsoft has released 'Microsoft Robotics Studio' - and it's free to download!

  • Update (Dec/07): And an excellent hardware platform can be found in the 'White Box Robotics' PC based robot.

To Relax

  • I read extensively, cycle occasionally, and punch and kick a kickbag when the mood takes me.

Goals

  • There does seem to be some demand for Alex Nesling to host sites! So after sorting out client website backups and redundancy I need to offer server side extensions. Done!

  • And this will be followed by an email server (the aim is to offer a total online package). I will either use Linux for this, or maybe FreeBSD. Demand insufficient so not needed!

  • Compile a list of links (and maybe take this further and put all relevant applications onto a downloadable .iso) targeted towards venue owners. The aim is to offer a complete, FREE (no operating system, application or licensing costs) suite of applications so a venue owner can install a file server, perform automated backups, perform office duties, design a website, etc. Done! See here.

  • To continue to increase my IT knowledge and skills (re: To Do list, shown at the bottom of this page) and thereby increase the IT capabilities offered by Alex Nesling. This also means having a real world goal of undertaking more IT installations (notably in the entertainment/club/pub sector) (Current!), and write an article or 2 of my experiences (Done! - go here for details).

  • Continue to expand my knowledge of Linux (Current!)

  • To learn to program. I have dabbled with scripts, java and visual basic, but am now rusty. Want to become proficient in C++.

  • To expand our property development business (Aborted). Due to current economic environment, this isn't viable. However, we have other plans in the pipeline!

  • To find new/novel uses of IT. I love to travel, and have always wanted to fly. It seems to me it might be interesting to equip a microlight with hi-tech gear, travel, and upload in real-time (or near enough) images, video, text, etc of my experiences to a website. If successful a book could be generated from this. Not looking for recognition - purely the fun I would have doing this!

  • In keeping with the above, I want to travel abroad extensively via a motorhome. I will buy a second hand motorhome and restore it and fully equip it with GPS, SatNav, fully loaded entertainment system comprising of flat screen, PC with DVD player, hard disk loaded with films and music. The PC will have online access to enable emailing, telephone (VoIP), access to home/work servers to administer any problems, store/upload photos and video clips, webcams to video talk with home and help with reversing/parking, etc. Dashboard PDA SatNav unit will be networked to main PC to control media content, and display parking/reversing webcam output.

  • Have motorbike riding lessons (Course Booked!). Update: CBT completed.

  • After next round of network upgrades/completing To Do list, and maybe an installation or 2, seek 'Chartered Status' from The BCS.

  • Do another MCP exam (and/or any other appropriate courses/exams to keep abreast).
