Paul Boggia - "I.T. - My Designs (Websites, Flyers, etc)"

Website Designs

Network Administration is my main work role, but I'm also responsible for designing our websites - and I find this is something I actively enjoy! I seem to be tinkering away on them whenever time allows. I host a couple of sites on my personal web server, however I have designed more than just the ones I host:

(Note: The sites as shown in the JPEG images below are as they were at time of creation, and will change over time. Click on the links for current versions).

In chronological order - most recent first...

Personal Sites (the following sites and designs are either my personal sites or were designed for friends as freebies. A gallery page showing paid designs for clients is under consideration).

Kingston Arms Freehouse Website Mark II

The site has been radically redesigned, It has grown over time to encompass new features, attractions, etc, that The Kingston Arms offers.

www.kingston-arms.co.uk

The original Kingston Arms site was designed some time ago using MS Publisher. MS Publisher has a variety of limitations, including no page centring, lack of scaling, and due to arbitrary positioning of page elements, updates proved tiresome. As a result I performed a complete redesign (without a template) of the site using MS FrontPage.

The Geldart's Website

A simple site showing new features, attractions, etc, The Geldart offers.

The Geldart (historical, locally hosted version. Map disabled).

The new landlord of The Geldart (Elvis Joncevski, a close friend) needed a simple site for his pub: The Geldart. It had to be template based with the design application hosted by the server (to enable simple and remote updates), and it had to be free. I setup a Microsoft Office Live account and designed a simple site.

Due to the very basic functionality of the online template driven design application, the design is nowhere near as custom or polished as I'd like. However, it does show that a free, online, web 2.0/cloud based design application & hosting service is suitable to both design, and host, a small business website. And it's ideal for the end user - it's simple to update, and it can be updated from any browser equipped remote location.

School.Machine. & School.Machine.Kiosk. Website

The site presenting my education based Linux distributions to the World Wide Web. It also offers free downloads.

www.school-machine.org.uk

I was pushed for time to get the project, including a website & two re-mastered Linux distributions, completed on time. So I used a template based designed, but with modifications.

Designed with MS FrontPage.

(see My Linux Distributions for more background information)

The Geldarts 'Internal' Web Page

Not so much a site as a homepage. It's seen on The Geldarts bar PCs whenever a new browser window is opened. Useful for announcements, offers, etc.

The GeldartNET (historical, locally hosted version).

As part of the re-launch of The Geldart (see 'The Geldarts Coming Soon' entry below), Elvis wanted to have some public terminals offering internet access to his customers. I re-mastered one of my Linux Kiosk distributions (thus allowing him to run his bar computers from CD), with a fixed homepage announcing events, special deals, etc. The site had to be a simple template design allowing Elvis to perform updates remotely and with the minimum of hassle. It also had to be free. I set up a simple Weebly design for him, of which this is a historical, locally hosted version.

Due to the nature of the online template driven design application, the design is nowhere near as polished or custom as I'd like. However it's ideal for the end user - simple to update and redesign.

The Geldart's "Coming Soon" Web Page

A simple site showing regular updates leading up to the re-launch of The Geldart in Cambridge..

The Geldart (historical, locally hosted version. Map disabled).

The new landlord of The Geldart (Elvis Joncevski, a close friend) needed a simple site showcasing the events leading up to his re-launch of The Geldart. It had to be template based with the design application hosted by the server (to enable simple and remote updates), and it had to be free. I setup a Microsoft Office Live account and made a simple 1 page site listing all the updates. It was so successful it reached over a 100 hits a day towards the end of its run! This is the historical, locally hosted version. The current live version has been radically redesigned to become The Geldarts homepage, showing menus, events, wine listings, etc (see 'The Geldart's Website' above)..

Due to the nature of the online template driven design application, the design is very basic. But it's suitable for the task - a one page list of events & updates.

Alex Nesling Ltd's Web Tools Website Mark III

Alex Nesling offers a number of free applications.

www.alex-nesling-web-tools.co.uk

This site has a different theme to the Alex Nesling 'mother' site. It used to be a S.E.O., but due to such sites becoming less viable, it's now a place to offer free applications (all designed by me). Due to time constraints I used weebly's template service to design the site. Weebly also hosts it and I set up a simple redirect from the Alex Nesling original domain hosting provider.

Again, due to it being a free online service, the editing functions are very basic, and the result is nowhere near as custom or as polished as I'd like.

Kingston Arms 'Internal' Web Page Mark II

Not so much a site as a homepage. It's seen on the Kingston Arms bar PCs whenever a new browser window is opened. Useful for announcements, offers, etc.

Kingston Arms Intranet 'Announcements' Page Mark II

I designed a homepage used for making announcements at the Kingston Arms. The Kingston Arms computers uses one of my re-mastered Linux distributions and when a customer opens a browser window they see this page first. Again I was pushed for time, so I used Microsoft FrontPage with a template, but with modifications.

Second of my Personal Websites

I stumbled across this free site & hosting offer.

www.paul-boggia.co.uk

This is a simple site designed with Microsoft Office Live inbuilt design application, which is a very restrictive online template driven design. I couldn't resist the offer from Microsoft to host a site, give me a domain name, and a bunch of email addresses, all FREE, FOREVER!

Due to the basic functionality of the online template driven design application, the design is nowhere near as polished or custom as I'd like. However this site is simply a placeholder with no purpose as yet.

First (& Main) Personal Website

I needed a single place to tie together my articles, Linux distributions, network notes, designs, etc.

www.paul-boggia.me.uk

Designed with MS FrontPage.

HospitalityMachine & HospitalityMachineKiosk Website

The site presenting my hospitality based Linux distributions to the World Wide Web. It also offers free downloads.

Alex Nesling Ltd's Web Tools Website Mark II

Alex Nesling offers a Search Engine Optimizer service offering free links.

www.alex-nesling-web-tools.co.uk (historical, locally hosted version).

Designed with MS FrontPage.

Updated! This site was (again) replaced with the Mark III design shown above. Search Engines no longer rate sites that have inbound links from link directories such as this one. So I altered the design and purpose of the site, and now it offers applications made/designed by Alex Nesling Ltd (or rather - me!).

At it's height, this site enjoyed several hundred hits a day. Not bad for a S.E.O. targeted towards local (Cambridge) services!

This site was replaced with the design shown directly above. I wanted the Mark II version to have a similar theme to the Alex Nesling 'mother' site.

Unlike the Mark II version above, a historical version wasn't kept.

Kingston Arms 'Internal' Web Page Mark I

Not so much a site as a homepage. It's seen on the Kingston Arms bar PCs whenever a new browser window is opened. Useful for announcements, offers, etc.

This design was used for the original Kingston Arms Intranet 'Announcements' page. The design was replaced with the 'Kingston Arms Internal Page Mark II' design, shown above.

Designed with MS Publisher (therefore for optimal viewing, use Internet Explorer).

This site was designed with MS Publisher, which has a number of limitations. As a result the site was redesigned with the Kingston Arms Mark II version shown above.

Flyer Designs

A spin off from designing websites is designing flyers, adverts, etc. I seem to end up doing all the flyer and advert designs too. As usual, the following designs were designed either for my personal use or for friends as freebies.

In chronological order - most recent first (Click on JPEG images to enlarge)...

Monthly Beer Festival Flyer Design

As a real ale pub, I thought it would be a good idea to hold monthly beer festivals (a novel idea in itself - no other pub that we know of does monthly festivals - although some do now!), and I designed a flyer & poster scheme to promote it. This design received quite a few favourable comments including those from the printing & delivery service 'dor 2 dor'.

Here are two different posters with the same scheme.

The Geldart's 3 Sided Flyer

I used my design for the Kingston Arms 3 sided flyer as a basis for the Geldart's re-launch flyer.

Like the Kingston Arms' flyer, the Geldart's flyer is designed to be folded into 3, and opens like a fan.

The reverse side of the page was also used.

Gardening Flyer Mark II

The following flyer was designed to see if there was any demand for a small gardening business in Cambridge. This design received quite a few favourable comments, including those from the printing & delivery service 'dor 2 dor'.

This flyer is a single sided flyer designed for a glossy print run. It was the second of 2 designs.

Gardening Flyer Mark I

This flyer was judged to be too fussy. I simplified it to become the Mark II version - but I do like the theme of the design and might use it if a site is needed for an unrelated future project.

This flyer was the first design before it was drastically changed to become the Mark II version shown above.

Kingston Arms 3 Sided Flyer

The Kingston Arms 3 sided flyer was used to promote all the new features we incorporated into the pub. This included new menus, free internet access, revised opening times, etc.

The A4 page is designed to be folded into thirds, so the finished flyer opens a bit like a fan.

The reverse side of the page was used too.

Advert Designs

Voucher Designs

Kingston Arms Voucher Design

As part of our 'Combat the Recession' strategy, I designed a £5 voucher. This has proved a great success over Christmas, and people inevitably spend these vouchers from Jan to Apr, which are quiet months, and they tend to bring friends which helps to boost trade! We sell these throughout the year as people buy them as birthday presents, gifts, etc.
