2. Information Technology

Alex Nesling has a large I.T. component, which is my sole responsibility. My time is split into roles outside Alex Nesling Ltd, inside Alex Nesling Ltd, and inside The Kingston Arms.

External Responsibilities

My external roles include I.T. installations (most notably in the hospitality trade), consultancy, writing articles, and providing support for my Linux based software.

Internal Responsibilities

My internal responsibilities include managing and handling day-to-day operational activities for network and data infrastructure (disaster recovery, problem resolution, capacity management, planning, etc), site design and maintenance, web hosting and support, (including backups, providing FTP access, etc). It should be noted this site is hosted by Alex Nesling Ltd. There is a comprehensive security and policy structure in place, several back up systems, an intranet, 2 subnets keeping the public and work pcs separate, etc.

My Two Networks

Alex Nesling Ltd and The Kingston Arms Freehouse have an extensive I.T. installation performed by myself. The public area of the pub itself has only 2 pcs and a wireless hotspot (it is a 'real ale' & 'gastro pub' first and foremost, but has an extensive behind the scenes network - including catering for all back office duties belonging to Alex Nesling Ltd. The result of which is that the staff stay in 'staff areas' and have no need to use the I.T. facilities in the residential areas or belonging to Alex Nesling.

Note: The public network used to feature computers locked down by Active Directory Services, various spy ware, anti virus applications, etc. However, since I replaced this setup with my HospitalityMachineKiosk software, I very rarely have to do any maintenance, and any I do undertake is purely hardware based. This has freed up sufficient time to allow me to pursue other interests, focus on the private network, push my consultancy work, etc.

Remastered Linux Distributions

I have also introduced two customised, remastered versions of Linux - HospitalityMachine & HospitalityMachineKiosk. Both are targeted towards hospitality venue managers. The first is a complete OS and application suite, the second is a kiosk type browser application. Go here for details and to download it. A lot of my time is taken up with working on new versions and answering questions (it seems to be quite popular in the States for some reason!).
